In Project Sekai a world where reality and digital fantasy intertwine, players embark on a captivating musical adventure. This rhythm game, born from a collaboration between SEGA, Craft Egg, Colorful Palette, and Crypton Future Media, presents a reality where beloved Vocaloid characters are traditionally known only in fiction. Yet, as players dive deeper, they discover ‘Sekai’, a mystical realm where unspoken emotions take shape, offering a fresh narrative perspective alongside Hatsune Miku and other iconic Vocaloids.
Project Sekai transforms familiar rhythm gameplay into an enthralling experience where precision and timing bring music to life. Adjustable difficulty settings ensure that both newcomers and seasoned players find their rhythm, challenging them to perfect performances and ascend the leaderboards.
At the heart of Project Sekai lies its rich narrative depth, where each character—from virtual idols to vibrant human protagonists—brings their own dreams and dilemmas into the spotlight. Through fully voiced dialogues and interactive story modes rendered in stunning Live2D, players explore personal growth and friendships that evolve with each note sung. The game’s gacha system allows for the acquisition of character cards, which further enhances abilities and personalizes the journey, deepening the player’s role in the unfolding drama.
Project Sekai transcends typical gameplay with its Virtual Lives feature, allowing fans to attend live concerts within the game. These performances, which mimic real-life Vocaloid shows, create a communal space where players from across the globe can interact in real-time. Regularly updated events and a burgeoning song library keep the community engaged, offering new music and collaborative challenges that ensure the game’s environment is always vibrant and reflective of player feedback.
In the heart of Shibuya, Tokyo, the rhythm game Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage unfolds, presenting a unique scenario where beloved virtual idols like Hatsune Miku exist only within the confines of fiction. Yet, these characters discover a gateway to “SEKAI,” a mysterious alternate reality that forms in response to human emotions. Each SEKAI manifests differently, reflecting the diverse emotional landscapes of those who access it. This game sets players on a compelling quest alongside these virtual singers to navigate their complex worlds and unravel the truths hidden in their “true feelings.”
Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage pivots around a silent, melody-less song called “Untitled,” that mysteriously appears on various personal devices. This song acts as a key to SEKAI, transforming as players delve deeper into understanding and expressing their emotions. As they interact with the song, it gradually develops a melody, lyrics, and finally a name, mirroring the player’s emotional journey. This evolving song allows for a fluid movement between the tangible reality of Tokyo and the ethereal realms of SEKAI, challenging players to find balance and harmony between two worlds.
The narrative of the game unfolds through the adventures of five distinct groups, each delving into different aspects of SEKAI:
Leo/need: Chronicles the story of Ichika Hoshino and her companions who mend old rifts and heal through the power of music within a school-themed SEKAI.MORE MORE JUMP!: Focuses on Minori Hanasato’s unwavering quest to become an idol, inspired by an idol-version Miku in a dazzling SEKAI.Vivid BAD SQUAD: Highlights urban musicians’ efforts to surpass the myths of the streets, guided by a hip-hop influenced Miku.Wonderlands x Showtime: Illustrates the attempt of a troupe to rejuvenate a faltering theater with the aid of a fantastical, clown-like Miku.Nightcord at 25:00: Concentrates on the story of Kanade Yoisaki, a solitary girl aiming to save her friend with assistance from Miku in a barren SEKAI.
Each ensemble’s path in Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage provides a distinct view on the transformative effects of self-expression and music’s restorative powers, encouraging players to immerse themselves in a layered journey of both virtual and emotional landscapes. The game challenges players to master intricate rhythms while cultivating empathy and personal growth among the characters they navigate through these intricately crafted environments.
Leo/need is a groovy all-girl pop-rock band made up of childhood friends who overcome their different paths and overcome emotional difficulties through music in Project Sekai. Set against the backdrop of SEKAI School, a classroom painted in sunset hues, this group finds harmony and reconciliation through themed versions of Hatsune Miku and Megurine Luka, who act as bandmates. Their journey is marked by a shared theme of memories and a signature color of Midnight Blue, symbolizing the depth and nostalgia of their past connections. Each member brings a distinct personality and role within the band, from the cool and responsible leadership of Ichika Hoshino, the band’s vocalist and guitarist, to the resilient and hopeful keyboardist, Saki Tenma, who battles a chronic illness.
The individual stories of the Leo/need members add layers of complexity to their collective narrative. Ichika, the pragmatic yet anxious leader, was the catalyst for the group’s reunion after discovering the mysterious “Untitled” track. Saki, returning from frequent hospital stays, wishes to recapture lost time and rebuild the bond that illness had strained. Honami Mochizuki, the group’s drummer, confronts her past insecurities about isolation and accusations from peers, striving to embrace her true self. Shiho Hinomori, the bassist known for her aloofness caused by damaging rumors, yearns for closeness with her friends once more, showing the power of music to heal and unite. Together, these four women use their musical talents to overcome personal adversities and rekindle the strong connections they once shared.
