The main gameplay is based on one-on-one battles where players choose fighters with unique special moves, combos, and finishing attacks called Fatalities. Matches are played in rounds, and the winner must defeat the opponent’s health bar before time runs out. Each character has different fighting styles, strengths, and combo chains. Players can block, jump, counterattack, and use enhanced special attacks by spending meter energy. X-Ray moves are also included, showing internal damage animations during combat.
The Story Mode is divided into 16 chapters, and each chapter focuses on a different playable character. Players control fighters such as Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Scorpion, Liu Kang, Sub-Zero, Kitana, and Raiden while progressing through tournament events and battles against Outworld forces. Each chapter contains several fights connected by cutscenes that explain the storyline and character relationships.
Main game features include:
Every fighter has unique moves and combo systems that require timing and memorization. Scorpion uses teleport attacks and spear abilities, while Sub-Zero relies on ice-based moves that freeze opponents. Characters can chain normal attacks into special moves to create longer combos. Learning spacing, blocking, and counter timing is important for winning harder matches. Training Mode allows players to practice moves and study combo lists before entering competitive battles.
