Instead of a dialogue-heavy narrative, Astro’s Playroom uses environmental storytelling connected to PlayStation history. Throughout the game, players discover references to classic games, accessories, and earlier consoles hidden inside the levels. Many collectible artifacts unlock additional information and interactive displays inside the PlayStation Labo museum area.
The game constantly introduces new mechanics to prevent stages from feeling repetitive.
Many interactions are tied directly to controller feedback. Different surfaces, weather effects, and object interactions produce distinct haptic responses during gameplay.
Each world contains multiple stages filled with enemies, hidden paths, and optional objectives. Players can complete levels normally or return later to search for missing collectibles and unlockables. Time trial modes also become available after progression through the main worlds, encouraging faster completion times and more precise movement.
